Set a Big Audacious Goal

A new school year is always exciting. Teachers and students alike are working with a fresh blank canvas and all things are possible.  Now that a month has gone by, we believe even stronger that students at AMS are being prepared to do great things in life. Our staff continues to be impressed with our student body. AMS students work hard, show respect, and seize each and every day.  As the principal of AMS, I want to say thank you to all of the parents and guardians for sending us a great group of kids.

A new year means new goals, and my hope is each student will set a big audacious goal.  It doesn’t need to be school related, but it should be a challenge worth remembering. I remember how my swim coach Brian Barnes changed my life.  All he did was tell me I was a hard worker, then he challenged me to set a goal to be a state champion.  He made one positive statement and completely changed the world I knew.  I know our teachers, along with all staff members, want to have the same impact on the students in their classrooms.  Please, sit down with your child to help them put a big goal on paper.  Let us know when they accomplish it so we can celebrate their success together.

AMS has put a big goal on paper. ISTEP results have come in across the state. ISTEP results don’t frighten us. We weren’t surprised to learn we scored above the state average for every grade level and in every content area. We have great teachers partnered with great students...so great things happen. Our big audacious goal at AMS is to be a Blue Ribbon School. Our strategy to get there is to see measurable growth in every single student, not just most students, but all students. We believe all students can learn and grow, with growth leading to mastery.  We’re excited to have already taken steps towards our goal.

In October, your child will come home with data that looks different because teachers are working to give you a better picture of how your child scores on assessments.  We are moving away from using a test to simply see if a student can read and recall basic content information.   Now, we are looking deeper at how each question measures a Depth of Knowledge and the skill tied to it.  Our grading policy remains the same. The collection of data should not impact your child’s success in the grade book. Instead, it should give you a more accurate picture of strengths, weaknesses, and progress.  Every teacher has made a benchmark assessment to implement towards the end of the first quarter. I will work to schedule a family night in early November to go over the data, then we can all decide together on next steps. I look forward to talking with you more about this.

As always, my door is open. Let me know if you ever need to sit down to discuss an issue. I do ask that you call to give a heads-up. October is National Bullying Prevention month. I know our teachers and guidance counselors have some activities planned. My October message will center around bullying.  Until then...Let’s keep working together to achieve unforgettable goals.
